What to Expect in our Classrooms

2.5-3 Year Olds

Toddlers at this age range are naturally excited to explore the environment and limits of their potential. We provide your child with a safe, loving environment for well-rounded growth and development. They are allowed the freedom to explore their fantasies and abilities while they learn essential socially acceptable behavior.

Fun-filled Learning

Closing a zipper or buttons and simple drawing (such as joining dots) are some of the activities that facilitate fine motor skills. Concentration is a major challenge in this age group. When the child engages in singing and dancing, their cognitive abilities are expanded. They learn how to remember new things and concentrate on one task at a time.

By age 3, the child should begin to invest in new words as well as make proper short sentences and questions, often three to five words. Repeating rhymes, reading stories and simply talking and listening are some of the activities that nurture language development. Parents are advised to avoid vulgar language around the child since they will definitely replicate it in their everyday speech.

Positive Enhancement

Pretend-play, scribbling, and drawing are encouraged to develop creativity. Toys are provided and group games are promoted to allow development of social skills. As the child learns how to communicate with peers and the caregivers, they grow out of expressing their emotions using tantrums. Also in the spirit of independence, the child is encouraged to get dressed or wash their hands on their own.

Positive Praise

Praising your child, by clapping or cheering, inspires your to repeat the same action. Here they learn by trial and error. Thus, they will explore other behavior in order to try and get praises. Since setting boundaries goes hand-in-hand with giving freedom, the toddler is taught how to take simple instructions and subtle punishment is given when bad behavior is repeated. It gives the child a sense of morality and discipline.

3-4 Year Olds

Watching your child grow, despite its challenges, is a beautiful thing. Between your child’s third and fourth birthday, they show tremendous improvement in all aspects of their development. Our program provides the child with a fun and safe environment to explore their imagination while helping them grasp aspects of reality.

The Journey Towards Developmental Milestones

Kids at this age often play in groups, which is highly encouraged. It helps the child to grasp the concept of sharing. They should discover that not all toys belong to them. This advances their social development.  By age 4, they have the capability to speak grammatically correct sentences with about five to ten words. The use of songs and storytelling provides the child with new words. This is exciting for them as it develops their language and communication skills. Also, at this age, they love telling stories and have a fairly good memory. When they return home, the child will want to narrate how their day went and parents are encouraged to actively participate in the conversation.

Learning the Basics

To sharpen their increased cognitive abilities, the children learn to memorize numbers in chronological order and understand the basic concepts of counting. Counting blocks are introduced since their sense of abstract thought is not developed. We strive to help them internalize colors such that they can recognize a red dress, a yellow book and so on. We emphasize the concepts of time such as lunchtime, morning, day and night. Fantasy play is encouraged since it opens the mind to creative ideas.

Discipline

When a child needs correction, he/she is informed about why the behavior is not acceptable. If the behavior continues, the child is redirected. They develop the ability to tell little lies and playing pranks. However, they still believe grown-ups can read minds so that helps to keep the discipline in check

Encouragement & Self Enhancement

Some freedom is given to the children to try and solve problems such as getting dressed, wiping after using the potty, tying shoelaces and washing hands. Proper supervision is still provided. The curious child also wants the freedom to ask “who”, “what”, “how” and “why” questions. This eagerness to learn the world around him shows an improved sense of observation.

We also give them the freedom to draw from their own imagination.  With improved motor skills, games that involve running, kicking, throwing, and jumping are highly encouraged.  We monitor expected growth and development milestones and let you know about area(s) where the child is deficient. If further evaluation is recommended, referrals will be made. Please visit your health professional if you have any questions about your child’s personality development.

Pre-K

The Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) program is essential for children between the ages 4 and 5. The maturity of social, motor, emotional, and cognitive skills helps the child develop a sense of independence. Here at Tullahoma Day Care we’ll provide your child with a good foundation for a smooth transition into elementary school.

Elements of Strong Pre-K Foundation

We promote games that involve running, jumping, swinging and climbing. Our playground is a safe, and really fun. The children play under close supervision to avoid accidents. We further nurture their physical abilities by encouraging eating with a fork, spoon, and sometimes a knife for spreading butter on bread. We train their hands and fingers to print some letters and draw concrete images, such as a chicken, table, or flower.

Important Subjects

Math and Science are introduced to develop better cognitive skills. Physical objects are used to teach math and science concepts. The child is taught how to use basic technology terms and equipment. Acting, singing and dancing are used to improve the child’s sense of creativity, memory and concentration. Painting, modeling, solving puzzles and drawing are fun and informative activities to teach letters, numbers, and other abstract concepts.

Our language lessons help the child develop longer and understandable sentences, up to twelve words long. New words are often introduced. We involve the children in storytelling to promote better language and communication skills. Using words to express emotions helps dispel temper tantrums and crying. Our children are also given a platform to ask questions. Here, we often explain the meanings of words they may have heard at home, on TV or elsewhere.

Social Skills

Their social skills are developed as they play with their peers. Copying of behavior is common within this age group. We, therefore, monitor the children to ensure they do not introduce or copy unpleasant behavior. Jokes are encouraged to grow the children’s sense of humor. As the child develops superior emotional understanding, they are able to recognize emotion in others. We teach the child how to talk about their ideas and feelings as well.  Our Pre-Kindergarten program is dedicated to producing smarter, stronger and more expressive children with strong personalities.
